I'd like to read Christopher Reeve's autobiography. I've read the one written by Naomi Judd, Tanya Tucker, and Cybill Shepherd. I've probably read a few others, but nothing is jumping into my mind right now.

I think it was called a Rebellious spirit or something and it was a biography about Helen keller. I also read biographies for schools research about Tolkien, Dickens, and Tennessee Williams. Dickens is a great writer, but a miserable chap himself. I wouldn't have wanted him for a friend if I was his age.

I enjoy reading these types of books. Do you have some suggestions for any good ones out there. I'll read it over this summer.

I enjoyed these books too. I've read a couple in the past, one was on Katharine Hepburn, that was quite good. I currently have a biography of Beethoven and currently reading "On Michael Jackson" by Margo Jefferson. I haven't finished it yet, but for what I've read, it's pretty good. Some strong language here and there though. I downloaded all of these books off of NLS. Enjoyed!

hello, the only two biographies I've read is, Tolkien a biography by humphrey carpainter and another one called born on a blue day, can't remember the name of the author, smiles.

I like autobiographies and memoirs. I'm reading two semi-biographical books right now: Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris and Take the Cannoli by Sarah Vowell. Both are NPR contributors and write some very amusing stories about their daily lives.

The books by Doris Stokes, about her life and work as a medium. Losing my virginity by Richard Branson. There's been more, but it took me ten minutes to get that last name out! lol. Be back soon if I can dreg some others out the old memory banks.

Hey all, I've read a few memoirs. Running with Scissors: a memoir about the author's childhood living with a manic depressive mother. She basically gives him away to her psychitrist. Dry: by the same author discribes his coping with alcoholism. And Magical think, and also possible side effects. These two are books of essays by the same author. Their halarious. The author is Augusten Burroughs. Not to sure of the spelling so you might want to make sure.

Some good titles:
Stick Figure
A Child Called It (Trilogy)
Anything by Torey Hayden
Boy by Roald Dahl
Without You: A Memoir of Love, Loss and the Musical "Rent" (if I got that title right)
I'm sure I'll think of more...But not just now.

I have 4 huge, braille volumes, Aled, the biography of Aled Jones, which is in a way, an autobiography as well as he had help from Darren Henley who's also helped Aled write some of the classical music series of talking books. I have the Story Of Classical Music on CD. I'd also love to read david Beckham's biography cover to cover too.

Ooh! Cool list!
My absolute favourite autobiographies....
The Roald Dahl ones, especially Boy, though his wartime stuff is pretty cool too.
My family and other Animals by Gerald Durrell, ah bugger it. Everything by Gerald Durrell.
The first two of Unreliable Memoirs and Falling Towards England by Clive James. He's written four, but I've not yet got hold of the last two.
Moab is my Washpot, Stephen Fry. Now I have to step away from the keyboard and gush adoringly and worshipfully over this book for a while. OMG! So, so much love!
One called Seal Morning, that my Grandma read me when I was little, and I can't remember the author. All about her weird aunt who took her away to an isolated little croft in northern Scotland, full of animals and weird folklore.
Tisha, a ghost-written autobiography, the writer escapes me.
Mary Renault wrote a heap about Alexander, some more fictionalised than others, and I'm completely in love with all of them.
Absolutely any of the Camebridge Footlights crew from the sixties and seventies, but especially the aussies. Germain and Barry and Clive and Bruce, Emma Thompson and Hugh Laurie and Ben Elton, they all rocked the joint, and they all wrote such charming books about it! Aww!

I'm currently chasing after Suzie Quatro's autobiography, and Russell Brand's, My Booky-wook. Cause everyone could use some more drugged-up, oversexed celeb memoirs, right? Right?

I am reading Frank Mccourt's one at the moment. It is called Teacher Man. Because Frank Mccourt was a teacher in New York. He was born in America but came from an Irish family.

Oh yes, I read the child called it ones, god I'm so crap with authors names though. Off to find the Steven Fry one! I also read The Gosple according to Chris Moils, which was quite good. Oh, and you must try Dianna's Story by Derek Longden (check spelling though) it isn't about princess Dianna, its about his wife and nursing her through her illness he is a very funny writer so try any of his cat books too.

If you're chasing Stephen Fry's book, Moab is my Washpot, may I really emphatically recommend the audio book that he read himself? Gods it's good! And makes the whole thing even more personal somehow. It's, ahem, around the place.

My favorite biography is Heavier Than Heaven, can't remember the author, but it's about Kurt Cobain, and it's very interesting.

Post 19 by Eleni21 (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Sunday, 22-Jun-2008 16:10:06

I do too. I read an exurpt from an english translation of the Memoirs of General Makriyannis and loved it. I really wish I could find more of it or other things from the heroes of the War of Independence. I also read a partially-completed translation of the autobiography of Yiannis Papaioannou at the Rebetika group on Google and I bought the biography of Vassilis Tsitsanis but have yet to crack that open with my boyfriend. I also want to buy the autobiography of Markos Vamvakaris and one about him written by his son Stelios.
